uBlock Origin Lite vs the original: what changed and why

uBlock Origin Lite is a stripped-down, install-and-forget ad blocker built for Chrome’s Manifest V3 rules, not a drop-in copy of the original. The original left the Chrome Web Store on 31 August 2026, so Lite is the version a Chrome user can install from there.

If you used the original for dynamic filtering or custom rules, you will notice the gap. If you just wanted ads gone, you may not.

Below is what each version does, what Lite cannot do, and who should still pick Firefox. Sources are the Chrome Web Store listing, the uBOL FAQ and the uBlock Origin README, all opened on 10 October 2026. We ran no performance tests.

Where each version stands in Chrome today

The uBlock Origin Lite listing shows version 2026.1006.1931, updated on 6 October 2026, with 21 million users and a 4.5 rating from 3.7K ratings.

The uBlock Origin README marks the Chromium store entry as removed, citing Google’s timeline for dropping all remaining Manifest V2 extensions. Firefox and Edge Add-ons are still listed, and GitHub releases carry a Chromium build you must install by hand that usually will not auto-update.

The maintainer says Lite is not an automatic replacement. In the FAQ he describes it as too different from the original to swap in silently.

One caveat on the update row: the FAQ also says the June 2026 change allows subscribing to outside lists in a way that keeps reliability. Its text does not say how often those lists refresh, so we leave that blank.

What Lite cannot do that the original could

The FAQ lists filter options Lite cannot translate into Chrome’s declarative rules, including strict1p, strict3p, redirect-rule, replace and regex-based removeparam. It also warns that many regex filters get rejected.

In practice, Lite is weaker against sites that fight blockers and more likely to leave a broken page when a filter cannot be converted. The FAQ says this outright.

The video above walks through setting a default filtering mode and per-site overrides in the popup, which is where most of the Lite interface lives.

What Lite does better, and who should switch browsers

Lite is entirely declarative, so Chrome applies the rules itself and the extension’s service worker is needed only when you open the popup or options page. The maintainer says this means it filters reliably at browser launch.

Pick Lite if you want a blocker you never touch. Choose Firefox with the full uBlock Origin if you rely on dynamic filtering, custom rule sets or filter lists from other sources.

An ad blocker is not antivirus. It cuts exposure to malvertising, but it will not catch the threats in our types of malware explained guide, and a blocker will not clean an infection.

Frequently asked questions about uBlock Origin Lite

Is uBlock Origin Lite as good as uBlock Origin?

No, it is deliberately narrower. It blocks with the same default lists, but it lacks dynamic filtering and several advanced filter options, and the FAQ says it deals less well with anti-blocker sites.

Can I run uBlock Origin Lite alongside another ad blocker?

No. The FAQ advises against it for the same reasons you should not stack blockers with the original, and suggests changing filtering mode or disabling other extensions if a site breaks.

Does uBlock Origin Lite still work in Chrome?

Yes. The Chrome Web Store listing shows a build updated on 6 October 2026. The original uBlock Origin is no longer in the Chrome store.
