Temu is safe to order from if you pay by card and treat it as a marketplace. Its declared data collection is narrower than Amazon’s on the same Google Play sheet, and UK consumer rights apply. The real risks are product safety and slow refunds.

What the Temu UK app declares it collects
Google Play’s data safety sheet is the closest thing to a permissions receipt. Set beside Amazon Shopping, Temu declares less and shares less.
| Data type | Temu | Amazon Shopping |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Approximate only, optional | Approximate and precise, optional |
| Photos and videos | Optional, app functionality | Optional, also analytics and personalisation |
| Payment info | Optional, app functionality | Optional, plus fraud prevention |
| In-app search history | App functionality, analytics, personalisation | Collected, also for advertising |
| Shared with third parties | Device IDs, for advertising | Photos, name, address, phone, device IDs, payment info |
| Deletion request offered | Yes | Yes |

Apple’s App Store label lists precise location for the same app, where Google Play lists approximate only, and files your email and phone number under the developer’s advertising. Check what you actually granted in your phone’s settings, not the label.

Who holds your data and where it travels
The UK data controller is Whaleco Technology Limited, an Irish company, and its privacy policy is written to UK GDPR. To fulfil an order Temu passes your name and address to the seller, and it shares data with advertising partners, which you can opt out of.
Affiliates outside the UK and EU get limited access, such as your shipping address, under standard contractual clauses.
If your details ever leak you have a route to data breach compensation in the UK. You can also ask Temu to erase your account data, a right the ICO says applies in some circumstances.
How payment is handled
Temu UK accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Klarna and Clearpay. Pay by credit or debit card if you want a dispute route independent of Temu.
Section 75 only covers single items over £100 on a credit card, which rules out most Temu baskets. Chargeback covers card purchases of any value, usually within 120 days, but Which? warns that money spent from a PayPal balance is unlikely to qualify.
Your account stores your address and order history, so give it a unique password, because AI can crack our passwords easily.
Your rights if an order goes wrong
You can cancel within 14 days of receipt without giving a reason, a statutory right Temu’s returns policy repeats, excluding sealed hygiene items and personalised goods. Temu adds a 90-day voluntary window, 45 or 60 days for some electronics, with the first return free.
The law says refunds must arrive within 14 days, yet Which? found Temu telling customers to allow up to 30. Past day 14, raise a chargeback rather than waiting.
The bigger risk is the product. Which? found Temu chargers that passed its electrical test but lacked UK safety markings, and in May 2026 the EU fined Temu €200 million over illegal products, a decision Temu called disproportionate. Skip unbranded electricals, baby items and toys.
Scams that borrow Temu’s name
Around 13 million people in the UK use Temu monthly, per SimilarWeb figures cited by Which?, which makes it a convenient lure for fake parcel texts. Check orders in the app, not from a link, and learn the types of phishing that reuse retail brands.
FAQ
Does the Temu app need access to my contacts?
Neither the Google Play nor the App Store listing declares contacts collection. If the app ever prompts for your contacts, decline.
Is it safer to use the Temu website than the app?
Both run under the same privacy policy and returns rules. The website keeps the app’s optional photo and location permissions off your phone, so for occasional orders the browser is the lower-exposure route.
Can I claim if a Temu item is faulty after 90 days?
The Consumer Rights Act covers faulty goods for up to six years in England and Wales, though after six months you must show the fault existed at delivery. Contact Temu support first, then your card provider.
