McAfee Total Protection explained, plus the fake pop-up scam

McAfee Total Protection is McAfee’s entry-level security suite: antivirus, a firewall, web protection, a password manager, Secure VPN, identity monitoring and the Scam Detector. In the UK it is sold as Basic (1 device) and Essential (5 devices), below the McAfee+ plans.

The other half of this search is a scam. A browser pop-up saying your “McAfee subscription has expired” is almost never McAfee.

Figures come from the vendors’ UK pages, opened on 22 October 2026. We ran no lab tests.

What McAfee Total Protection includes

On the UK plan page, Basic and Essential carry the same feature set. They differ only in device count and price.

Security covers the Scam Detector for text, email and video scams, antivirus, web protection, Advanced Firewall, File Shredder, Tracker Remover and the Virus Protection Pledge.

Identity and privacy covers identity monitoring, a password manager and Secure VPN.

McAfee’s own comparison marks identity restoration, Lost Wallet Support, Personal Data Cleanup and Social Privacy Manager as missing from both tiers. Those start with McAfee+ Premium or Advanced.

UK prices and the renewal jump

Basic costs £29.99 for the first year and auto-renews at £79.99. Essential costs £39.99 for 5 devices and renews at £95.99. McAfee labels both as first-term prices for new customers, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Put a reminder in your calendar a month before renewal. Then decide whether to pay full price, switch off auto-renew or move vendor.

The fake McAfee pop-up scam

You are on an ordinary website and a window or notification claims your McAfee subscription has expired, or that your computer is infected. It shows McAfee branding and a button to renew, scan or call.

It does not come from McAfee software. Usually a site you visited once was granted permission to send browser notifications, and it keeps pushing alerts even when that site is closed. McAfee’s own pop-up guide describes this “Allow notifications” trick.

The aim is a click through to a checkout, a card form on a fake page, or a call to “support” that ends with a remote access request. McAfee says no legitimate security scan asks you to install remote access software.

The mistake most people make is clicking the X inside the pop-up. McAfee warns those buttons can trigger downloads or redirects, so treat every button in the window as part of the scam.

How to get rid of the pop-ups

  1. Close the tab with your browser’s own controls. If the pop-up covers the screen, end the browser in Task Manager on Windows or use Force Quit on a Mac.
  2. Remove notification permissions. In Chrome go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications; in Edge, Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Notifications. Delete any site you do not recognise.
  3. Check your browser extensions and installed apps, and remove anything you did not add.
  4. Check your real subscription by typing mcafee.com into the address bar yourself and signing in.

If you entered card details, ring your bank straight away. If you lost money, the NCSC points you to Report Fraud at reportfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and Police Scotland on 101.

The same tells show up in email, so our guide to phishing email examples and their giveaways is worth a read too.

Read this as a feature list, not a ranking. Norton’s 50 GB backup and Bitdefender’s capped VPN are the clearest differences.

If the VPN is what you care about most, our Norton VPN review goes deeper. If you only want malware protection on one Windows PC, the Bitdefender Antivirus Plus review covers a lighter option.

McAfee Total Protection: common questions

Is McAfee Total Protection the same as McAfee+?

No. Total Protection is the lower tier. McAfee+ Premium and Advanced add Personal Data Cleanup and Social Privacy Manager, and Advanced adds identity restoration.

Does McAfee warn me about expiry with a browser pop-up?

Do not trust one that appears on a website. Ignore it and check your account by typing mcafee.com yourself; a browser alert with a phone number or “renew now” button is the scam pattern McAfee describes.

Does McAfee Total Protection include a VPN?

Yes. Secure VPN is listed for both Basic and Essential on McAfee’s UK plan page.
